Humanity, its own past long forgotten, is blamed for the fall of the God King’s ancient empire and is now subjugated under a global feudal order. Through brutal ritual, myth, and spectacle, the Aza’kai enforce their rule as they vie among themselves for relics of the lost age—artifacts said to contain the secrets of divine power.

But a young woman, Via Winter, living under the rule of the most powerful Aza’kai, Typhon, unlocks the most dangerous of these secrets: the Language of Angels. Via quickly finds herself at the heart of a deadly struggle among the Five Houses of the Aza’kai, a conflict that draws in even Typhon’s own brother Jaik, who begins to question the brutal order he enforces.

For Via, the stakes are deeply personal. Her younger brother Kir bears a wound inflicted by Typhon’s supernatural Shadowhounds: a wound that never heals—and that seems to draw him toward the very power that threatens them. When Via uses an ancient secret to save her brother, she instead sets him on a path toward becoming one of Typhon’s elite warriors.

As Via learns that she and Kir may belong to a long-lost, hunted bloodline of unknown origin, she is forced to risk everything her own humanity to save him.
